The group, with membership limited to sixteen, met monthly in members' homes. Abstract The Friendly Union Society was formed in Charleston in 1813. It consisted of a membership of no more than fifty men and no less than five. It was formed for the relief of orphans and widows in the community; and to provide for the general welfare of the community as a whole.
